Empire State Plaza
98-acre state complex of civic hardscape, fountains, and the underground Concourse — not an empty rectangle. The Plaza already runs a state seasonal ice rink.
People write Albany and picture Empire State Plaza as empty winter hardscape. It is not. The state already installs a free seasonal Plaza Ice Rink on that deck, and the outdoor Plaza is closed to ordinary events from December through March except for that rink. A quote here is a hotel courtyard, a Capital Center room with a real dock, a UAlbany green after class, or a marked lot OGS did not already ice. Who controls the pad after five o'clock matters more than the Capital District forecast.
A quote needs the street address and who signs for the pad after dark. Guests can come from I-87, the train, or UAlbany. The truck still needs one Albany dock. Write hotel, Capital Center, campus, or a lot off the Plaza — not “the Capital Region.”
Capital District winters are cold enough for outdoor ice from late November into March, but Plaza wind and rain still shut hours. Indoor Capital Center or hotel rooms keep a public program when the deck is a skating pool. Do not treat Empire State Plaza or MVP Arena as empty ice. Washington Park is one measured lawn panel after trees and the lake.
The Plaza is 98 acres of civic hardscape, fountains, and the underground Concourse. That number is why forms arrive with no rectangle. We do not review the whole complex. We review one panel someone actually controls — and we will not bid against the state's own rink. If your Saturday is a reception, name the hotel and the dock clock. If it is a public program, name a lot or lawn the Plaza Ice Rink is not sitting on. MVP Arena ice, when the building is in hockey or ice-show mode, is also not a portable pad. Washington Park is the other postcard. It is an Olmsted park with a lake, trees, and walks. One lawn panel can work. The whole park cannot. Indoor Capital Center rooms keep public hours when Plaza wind or rain turns the outdoor deck into a skating pool. The load-in is a Concourse ramp and a Capitol Police desk, not a hope that Madison Avenue is a truck route. Send the last turn a box truck can make, and say whether guests are legislators, students, or the public.
Concourse ramps, garage heights, and OGS or hotel security desks decide Albany more than acreage. A Capital Center door width is a measurement. A Plaza fountain deck is not a vacant lot. Write the last legal truck stop, not the view of the Egg.
The outdoor Plaza is closed December through March except for the state's rink. Campus weeks and session weeks stack downtown. Give a date range, and say if you can move indoors when Plaza rain is the week.
Albany quotes fail when they treat Empire State Plaza as vacant hardscape. OGS already installs a free seasonal Plaza Ice Rink on that deck. A portable quote is a hotel courtyard, a Capital Center room, a UAlbany green, or a marked lot the state did not already ice — plus a truck path that survives Concourse ramps and Capitol Police.

Rink sizes we can review here The Plaza looks like 98 acres and still is not a vacant sheet. Most honest Albany quotes are a Capitol-area courtyard, one civic panel that is not the state's rink, or a marked lot off the complex. We do not bid the Empire State Plaza Ice Rink or take MVP Arena ice in hockey mode. We do not quote a permanent rink as a portable product. Send the pad size and event dates for a Albany quote — use Get a Quote above or the form at the bottom of this page.
Capitol-area hotel courtyards and indoor civic rooms. About 12–20 skaters once boards and a walk path are in.
One measured plaza panel after security stanchions and the existing fountain rink are left alone. About 40–65 skaters.
A marked lot or campus grid off the Plaza. Needs a real truck path through state or campus security, not the whole 98 acres.

How it works
In Albany we review 20 × 40 ft courtyards, a 40 × 60 ft civic panel that is not the state's rink, and 40 × 80 ft only on a marked lot off the Plaza. We do not treat the 98-acre complex as one sheet.
Outdoor works in a dry cold stretch away from the state's Plaza rink. Indoor Capital Center and hotel rooms keep public hours when Plaza wind or rain would shut a deck.
The review checks whether the pad is the existing Plaza Ice Rink or a different lot. You may be asked who signs with OGS, the hotel, or UAlbany.

Capitol-adjacent hotel and association receptions keep a party running through wind, thaw, or a crowded outdoor calendar. Send ceiling height, floor protection, dock or freight limits, and how guests reach the room in Albany.
Convention-center indoor activations keep a party running through wind, thaw, or a crowded outdoor calendar. Send ceiling height, floor protection, dock or freight limits, and how guests reach the room in Albany.
UAlbany campus programs need who controls the lawn after hours, turf or floor protection, and whether guests are students, staff, or the public — not a Albany, NY pin alone.
Marked lots away from the state's own Plaza rink need a measured pad, honest load-in, and a guest count that fits the boards — not acreage under the Albany, NY name alone.

Syracuse has iced Clinton Square every winter since 2001. That fountain deck is the city's rink, not a vacant plaza, and Parks also runs John Dunn and Sunnycrest. A portable quote here is the SU Quad after the academic week is named, a Destiny USA stall grid, or an Oncenter…
